A fun and easy Halloween appetizer that transforms classic taco dip into a spooky mummy. Creamy black bean layers are wrapped in crescent roll ‘bandages’ and baked until golden, creating a crowd-pleasing dish that’s perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 15 ounce can refried black beans
  • 15 ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 packet (3 tablespoons) taco seasoning
  • 2 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives
  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
  • Tortilla chips, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Let cream cheese soften at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. Add the refried black beans, drained canned black beans, and taco seasoning to the cream cheese mixture. Stir until evenly distributed, leaving some whole beans intact for texture.
  4. Spread the black bean mixture evenly into a 9-inch pie plate or round baking dish, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  5. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded Mexican cheese over the black bean layer.
  6. Unroll the crescent roll dough on a cutting board and pinch the seams together to form a rectangle. Cut the dough into strips about 1/2 inch wide (about 12 to 15 strips).
  7. Lay the dough strips across the dip in a crisscross pattern, leaving small gaps between strips to resemble mummy bandages.
  8. Place the pie plate on a baking sheet and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the crescent roll strips are golden brown and puffed, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Arrange two olive slices near the top of the mummy for eyes. Optionally, add small dollops of sour cream in the center of each olive for pupils.
  10. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheese over the top. Garnish with chopped cilantro around the edges. Serve immediately with tortilla chips.

Notes

Chill the dip for 10 minutes before adding dough strips to prevent them from sinking. For best results, use full-fat cream cheese and shred cheese from a block. Let dip rest 5 minutes before serving to allow layers to set.
