These football-shaped brownie bites are a game day favorite—fudgy, easy to make with a box mix, and decorated with buttercream laces. Perfect for tailgates, they’re a crowd-pleaser that looks impressive with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (18.3 oz) fudge brownie mix (e.g., Ghirardelli or Duncan Hines)
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature preferred)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • White gel food coloring (optional)
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on the long sides. Spray parchment lightly with non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, combine brownie mix, eggs, oil, and water. Stir until just combined (about 40 strokes). Do not overmix.
  3. Pour batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, until edges are set and center still looks slightly soft. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out with moist crumbs.
  4. Cool brownies in pan on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Use parchment handles to lift slab onto rack and cool completely (about 45 minutes to 1 hour).
  5. Once completely cool, use a football-shaped cookie cutter (2.5 to 3 inches) to press straight down and cut out shapes. You should get 12 to 15 footballs.
  6. While brownies cool, make buttercream: Beat softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth (about 2 minutes). Add powdered sugar one cup at a time, mixing on low. Add cream, vanilla, and salt. Increase speed to medium-high and beat 3 to 4 minutes until light and fluffy. Add a tiny drop of white gel food coloring if desired.
  7. Transfer buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip (or snip corner of a zip-top bag). Pipe a short vertical line down the center of each football brownie, then 2 to 3 short horizontal lines across the center to create laces.
  8. Let piped brownies sit at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes to firm up the buttercream before serving or transporting.

Notes

For cleaner cuts, dip the cookie cutter in powdered sugar between cuts. Bake brownies the night before and cut shapes the next morning for best results. If using a different brownie mix, adjust egg/oil amounts per box instructions. For outdoor tailgates, use melted white chocolate instead of buttercream for laces to prevent softening.
