Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round platter or cutting board (1214 inches wide)
  • 1 cup broccoli florets (fresh, cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 cup cauliflower florets (fresh, cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 cup carrot sticks (about 34 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 3-inch sticks)
  • 1 cup celery sticks (about 34 stalks, cut into 3-inch sticks)
  • 1 cup bell pepper strips (mixed colors—red, yellow, orange)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes (whole, stems on)
  • 1 cup cucumber rounds (sliced about 1/4-inch thick)
  • 1 1/2 cups ranch dressing (recommended: Hidden Valley)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 12 drops black or purple food coloring (gel works best)
  • 1 small zip-top bag (for piping)
  • 1 large black olive (for spider body)
  • 8 small black olive slices (for spider legs)
  • 1 small dollop of cream cheese or ranch (to stick spider together)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ranch Dip: In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups ranch dressing, 1/2 cup sour cream, and 1/4 cup softened cream cheese. Mix with a rubber spatula until smooth and fully combined. Set aside about 1/4 cup of this mixture in a separate small bowl.
  2. Color the Dip: To the larger portion of the dip (about 1 3/4 cups), add 1-2 drops of black or purple food coloring. Stir until the color is evenly distributed.
  3. Create the Piping Bag: Spoon the reserved 1/4 cup of uncolored ranch dip into a small zip-top bag. Squeeze the air out, seal it, and snip off a tiny corner—about 1/8 inch wide.
  4. Fill the Center Bowl: Spoon the colored ranch dip into a small ramekin or serving bowl. Smooth the top. Place the ramekin in the center of your large round platter or cutting board.
  5. Pipe the Spiderweb Design: Pipe a spiral of white ranch starting from the center of the colored dip and moving outward. Then, using a toothpick or the tip of a knife, gently drag lines from the center outward through the white spiral, creating the classic web pattern. Drag about 6-8 lines evenly spaced around the dip. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag.
  6. Arrange the Vegetables: Starting from the outer edge of the platter, arrange your vegetables in concentric circles around the dip. Start with broccoli and cauliflower florets, then add carrot sticks, celery sticks, and bell pepper strips in alternating sections. Finally, place cherry tomatoes and cucumber rounds closer to the center. Leave small gaps between the veggies so the platter surface shows through.
  7. Make the Spider Decoration: Take one large black olive for the spider body. Cut 8 small slices from another olive for the legs. Using a tiny dollop of cream cheese or ranch as ‘glue,’ attach the legs to the body. Place the spider on the edge of the ramekin or on a vegetable near the center.
  8. Final Check: Step back and look at your platter. Adjust any vegetables that seem out of place. The web design should be clearly visible in the center.

Notes

You can chop all the vegetables up to 24 hours in advance and store them in separate zip-top bags in the refrigerator. The dip can also be made a day ahead—just keep the colored and white portions separate until you’re ready to assemble. Wait to pipe the web design until just before serving for the cleanest look. For a vegan version, use plant-based ranch, sour cream, and cream cheese. For a gluten-free version, check the ranch label.
