A lighter version of the classic buffalo chicken dip, baked inside a crusty sourdough bread bowl. Creamy, spicy, and satisfying, this crowd-pleasing appetizer comes together in under 30 minutes and is perfect for game day, parties, or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (reduced-fat optional)
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (Fage 2% recommended)
  • 1/3 cup buffalo hot sauce (Frank’s RedHot recommended)
  • 1/4 cup ranch dressing (Hidden Valley or homemade)
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded (rotisserie chicken works well)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided (Cabot recommended)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 green onions, sliced (plus more for garnish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (8–9 inches in diameter)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (or olive oil)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for bread bowl)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a sharp serrated knife, cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the sourdough loaf at a slight angle. Remove the top and set aside. Gently pull out the soft bread from inside, leaving about a 1-inch thick wall. Save the bread pieces for dipping.
  3. Make the garlic butter: In a small bowl, mix melted butter with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. Brush the inside of the bread bowl and the cut side of the lid with this mixture. Place bread bowl and lid on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly toasted.
  4. Mix the dip filling: In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese with Greek yogurt until smooth and creamy (about 2 minutes with a hand mixer). Add buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  5. Add the chicken and cheese: Fold in shredded chicken, 3/4 cup shredded cheddar, all of the mozzarella, and sliced green onions. Stir until evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  6. Assemble the bread bowl: Remove the bread bowl from the oven. Spoon the dip mixture into the toasted bread bowl, packing it gently. Top with remaining 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Bake the dip: Place filled bread bowl back on the baking sheet. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until hot and bubbly and cheese is melted and golden. If edges brown too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil.
  8. Finish and serve: Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with additional sliced green onions and chopped parsley if using. Place lid on top at an angle or serve alongside. Serve warm with reserved bread pieces, tortilla chips, celery sticks, or carrot sticks.

Notes

For best results, use a dense, crusty sourdough loaf. Do not skip the pre-toasting step—it prevents the bread from getting soggy. Let cream cheese soften properly to avoid lumps. Shred your own cheese for smoother melting. Let the dip rest for 5 minutes after baking to allow flavors to meld and the dip to set slightly.
