A creamy, spicy Halloween-themed taco dip topped with a sour cream spiderweb and adorable black bean spiders. Made with lean turkey and Greek yogurt for a healthier twist, this crowd-pleaser comes together in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed (reserve 12 whole beans for spiders)
  • 1 lb lean ground turkey or chicken (93% lean)
  • 1 packet low-sodium taco seasoning (or homemade blend: 1 tbsp chili powder, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp oregano)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce, finely chopped
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes, seeds removed
  • 1/2 cup diced red onion
  • 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat or 2%)
  • 1/2 cup light sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice (fresh squeezed)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 whole black beans (reserved from can)
  • 12 small pretzel sticks, broken in half (for spider legs)
  • 24 tiny dots of cream cheese (for eyes)
  • Tortilla chips for serving
  • Optional: sliced jalapeños, extra cilantro, hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the black bean spiders first. Take the 12 whole black beans and pat them dry with a paper towel. Insert 4 pretzel stick halves into each bean — two on each side — at a slight angle so they look like spider legs. Use a toothpick to dab tiny dots of cream cheese on the front of each bean for eyes. Set aside on a plate.
  2. Cook the turkey filling. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook for 6-8 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula, until no longer pink. Drain any excess fat. Add the taco seasoning and 1/2 cup water. Stir well and let it simmer for 3-4 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly — about 5 minutes.
  3. Layer the base. Spread the cooked turkey mixture evenly across the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate or shallow serving dish. Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and red onion. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over everything.
  4. Make the yogurt web mixture. In a small bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt, sour cream, lime juice, and salt until smooth and thick. Transfer to a piping bag or zip-top bag and snip a tiny corner off.
  5. Pipe the spiderweb. Starting from the center of the dip, pipe a small circle of yogurt mixture. Then pipe concentric circles around it, spacing them about an inch apart. You should have 4-5 circles total.
  6. Draw the web lines. Take a toothpick and gently drag it from the center circle outward through all the circles to the edge. Wipe the toothpick clean, then drag from the center outward at a different angle. Repeat until you’ve created 8-10 lines radiating from the center.
  7. Place the spiders. Gently press the black bean spiders onto the yogurt web, spacing them evenly around the edge. Place 6 spiders on the outer edge and 6 on the inner circles.
  8. Chill before serving. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes before serving to let the yogurt web set. Serve with tortilla chips.

Notes

Let the turkey cool for at least 5 minutes before layering to prevent melting the yogurt web. The yogurt consistency should be like thick pancake batter. Use a white dish to make the spiderweb pop visually. Black bean spiders can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored in the fridge. For best results, add spiders just before serving to keep pretzel legs crunchy.
